Welcome To Runnels County
Welcome to Runnels County located in the heart of Texas. Noted for its diversity of topography, the county seat, Ballinger, is conveniently located about half way between the larger metropolitan cities of San Angelo and Abilene. The Extension Program, directed by the Runnels County Extension Program Council, strives to serve a population who derives its main income from a mix of agriculture, small industry, and other commercial opportunities. Major points of interest in the area include Lake Ivie, 15 miles to the southeast of Ballinger; The Cross, one mile south of Ballinger; and Fort Chadbourne, near the Runnels and Coke county lines. The county’s three incorporated cities include Ballinger, Winters, and Miles. These cities, along with many small communities, contribute a rich cultural background of German, Czech, Spanish, Irish, and English influences. Four school districts and one alternative campus provide education for the youth of the county.
Around the courthouse are beautiful hybrid irises that bloom in the spring. The east side of the courthouse includes irises belonging to the American Iris Society. These irises are from the Dykes Medal Collection. The colors are vibrant and very unusual. Come out in April and see the beautiful irises and take pictures.

Extension brings the resources of the Texas A&M University System to Runnels County. Through field based faculty, Extension provides unbiased, research-based information, educational programs, and technical assistance in the following core service areas: Agriculture, Community & Economic Development, Environmental Stewardship, Individual & Family Capacity, Nutrition, Diet and Health, and Youth Development.
